Jim Walker – Director, Fire pump Guru
Jim founded Protech Automotive Ltd in April 1998. With his previous experience and knowledge of the New Zealand Fire Service(now FENZ) systems and requirements, having had roles from mechanic(A grade) to quality surveyor of fire pumps. Jim’s passion for emergency vehicle service and equipment repair, lead naturally into offering a one stop shop to the NZFS. Successfully attaining the Arapawa(Wellington) fire region maintenance contract enabled not only this but the birth of our great company. After a couple years and with further in-site into NZFS requirements Jim introduce annual fire pump testing and reporting in 2000 and Rescue Equipment test and servicing soon thereafter.
Jim currently still does most of the fire pump testing and enjoys his time on the road taking in our beautiful country.
Anne Walker – Director, Administration Manager
Co-Founding Protech Automotive with Jim in 1998, from the beginning Anne has managed the accounts and office and is key to the successful day to day running of the company. In 2008, when we started providing private car clients servicing and repairs as well as warrant of fitness. Anne took on the new role of client liaison, looking after client inquiries and bookings, as well as still maintaining the accounts and front office.
Anne is one of the first faces you see when you come through the front door, so come on in and say “Hi”.
Martin Fergusson – Workshop Manager, Client Contracts Manager
Martin(Marty) originally joined our team as a part time student,gaining valuable workplace experience. With a keen interest in cars and all thing fast and loud. Marty spent a number of years with us building his knowledge, experience and skills and in the process achieved the level of mechanic. Having been with Protech from a young age, Marty took a sabbatical in 2011 to gain experience outside the company and pick up new skills. With an invaluable amount of industry knowledge and an opportunity to take on the role of managing the workshop, Marty returned in 2014 as Workshop Manager and also took up the new role as Client Contract Manager. This means that as well as Managing the day-to-day workshop operation and flow of work, Marty’s role involves meeting and liaising with our larger more specialized contract clients.
Craig Hilton – Rescue Equipment Manager
Joining Protech Automotive Ltd workshop in April 2006, Craig started out as a Mechanic and quickly progressed to become workshop manager. He held this position for several years as well as furthering his experience and knowledge within Protech, He is also one of only a few people in New Zealand to travel to America and completed the EVT training on offer from Fire Pump Manufacturers(Darley,Waterous,Hale). Craig is also one of the few rescue technicians in NZ able to test and certify to the high “CertiSafe” standard. With the creation of a new specialized role in 2014, Craig was keen to progress his portfolio and accepted a new management position and is currently our Rescue Equipment Manager looking after all the specialized tools and equipment for our emergency services clients, covering service, repair and testing/certifying, both on-site and at our Hamilton workshop.
Craig spends a lot of his time on the road in his van around the North Island so give him a toot and a wave if you see him.
James Ruck – Mechanic
James joined the team in February 2014 and heads our car department. With previous experience in running a car workshop and his seemingly endless mechanical knowledge of not just cars but almost anything with an engine, James is the guy you want taking care of your vehicle/s. James organizes and completes almost single handedly, client servicing, Warrants, repairs and anything else that comes in the door.

Leon Hill – Mechanic

The Protech Story
Protech Automotive Ltd is a privately owned and operated company based in Hamilton, New Zealand.
The company was founded in 1998 in Wellington, where we originally worked exclusively with the NZ Fire Service covering the lower North Is and upper South Is maintaining and servicing their fleet of Appliances, Portable pumps, Generators and Jaws of Life equipment. In addition to the NZFS, Protech handled the testing and repair of Fire appliances based at NZ Defence bases, Wellington Airport fire rescue, Various District councils, some Forest management groups and Rural brigades. In 2000 annual testing of all fire pumps was set up to assist the NZFS with their fleet assessment processes and allowing a minimum benchmark to be set for Fire Pump performance. Fire Pump Testing was largely a mobile service covering from Coromandel and Waikato in the North to Canterbury and The West Coast in the South and everywhere in between.
In 2002 Protech relocated to Hamilton, originally based in Chartwell and carrying on our relationship with the NZFS covering Waikato and Coromandel. We soon out grow this facility and in 2006 we moved to Te Rapa where a purpose-built garage was constructed. With more room to move Protech looked to diversify further, adding non- Fire heavy transport vehicles to our client base and building on the Rescue equipment/pump testing division with a full time mobile pump testing vehicle and rig being set up to service all year round.
2008 brought further expansion to our NZFS contract to include a large part of the Bay of Plenty, This required a 2nd facility to be set up in Rotorua to handle the extra Appliances and equipment in the area. In Hamilton we continued to grow with the addition of a parts department to handle our growing supply client base and support the workshop and also vehicle Warrant Of Fitness, servicing and repairs adding to our list of services provided, with this expanding to a dedicated car bay and staff in 2009.
In 2014 came a re-structure of our resources which unfortunately lead to the closure of our Rotorua premises, But this also meant we were able to split our Rescue equipment and Pump testing, creating two separate divisions which allowed us to carry on providing pump performance testing and reporting to our clients whilst adding a dedicated Rescue equipment test/service and repair vehicle to our growing fleet of service vehicles which with the additional support from our suppliers are able to provide a one stop shop for all Rescue equipment, Jaws Of Life, Airbags and other small engine equipment.
The company continues its work the general public, NZ Defence, Rural Fire and Industrial Brigades.
